Simón Bolívar Hydroelectric Plant: Rehabilitation of the floating gates of the spillway, guri.

FAPCO Hydro carries out the rehabilitation of the CFA floating gates of the spillway for the maintenance of the radial gates of the spillway in Guri.

They are large gates, 36 x 19.7 m and weighing 800 tons .

The CFA gates float in the lake of the dam, and move to vertical position by entering water into its ballast tanks. Once vertical, it is moved upstream of the spillway channel to be intervened. The gate seals against the steel frame embedded in the dam's concrete by slightly opening the radial gate to drain the water.

The gates are brought out of the lake to the mainland, using an extraction and launch platform equipped with filament jacks of sufficient capacity. Any damage to the metal structures was repaired. Then, sandblasting and painting of surfaces exposed to water was done. Likewise, all valves and ballast tanks were rehabilitated and new rubber seals were installed.

At the end, the gates were launched back in the lake, operational tests were carried out to guarantee the operability of the equipment.

Fapco Hydro contributes to safety of the hydroelectric complex by keeping operational the CFA gates, which allows if needed, to intervene the radial gates of the spillway.
